Shades of Mac & Barons? Even though the narrator’s name is Mackenzie, I’d have to lean toward “no.” Mackenzie isn’t particularly gifted with much in the way of a super power or awesome battle skills. It is told from a single person POV (as are most UF) and deals with a gifted human’s relationship with the Court Fae and the Rebel Fae. This one is one of many of the UF genre that deals with the darker side of the Fae. My only complaint is that the explanation behind Scarlett’s personality is left a bit too far along in the book. The world building here is wonderful and Olson uses the new-to-this police officer as a vessel to communicate the rules in this brave new world without managing to seem info-dump or preachy about it. When she gets caught at a gruesome triple murder scene, she has to juggle the need for justice from the police and the want of concealment from her supernatural boss. As a result, she ends up as a sort of clean-up crew for the magical community. Rather, Scarlett is a magical null, meaning that all magic ceases to work or be effective in her presence. If your post includes spoilers, please hide spoilers with the spoiler tag (/spoiler)Īnother in the UF genre, this story is told to us by Scarlett Bernard, a “null.” There are no fae in this story, just good old fashioned witches, werewolves and vampires.
